T-LT 1941 - Introduction to Ensemble in Cont Theater
What is Ensemble Theater? Is it a practice? An approach? A philosophy? An aesthetic? What makes it different from other kinds of theater? When, how, and why does Ensemble Theater emerge? How do past practices inform our own ensemble aesthetic? This seminar is a hybrid of history, theory, and case studies of ensemble theater practices, philosophies, and companies. We will examine the origins of contemporary ensemble theater in Europe and North America, considering the different aesthetic principles and ethics. We will look at the range of approaches, techniques, and goals for ensemble work, the varied definitions of collaboration, different relationships to the audience, and the triumphs and shortcomings of ensemble theaters.
