M-LT 71344 - Bach's Passions
This course examines musical settings of the biblical Passion. More specifically, it considers works composed by and known to J.S. Bach during his tenure in Leipzig (1723–50). Topics include Passion settings familiar to Bach, Bach's two surviving Passions, strategies and conventions of sacred music composition, matters of performance practice, and issues related to religious intolerance and discrimination.
