The object of this course will be to study all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies by focusing, on the one hand, on their musical language and structure and, on the other, on the various ways in which they can be understood as expressing aspects of contemporary culture. Musical traditions and innovations will be considered, together with the wide range of symphonic models generated by Beethoven along with his constantly evolving musical expression.
