M-LT 71324 - The Castrato
This course examines the castrato. More specifically, it regards this individual – the principal male vocalist of the 17th and 18th century – as a mixture of singing voice, physical oddity, economic commodity, and cultural phenomenon. Topics include individual singers, genres and settings in which castratos performed, and contemporary reactions these men elicited from their audiences.
