M-LT 71321 - Schoenberg: Music, Ideas, Influence
Focusing on representative works from each of Schoenberg's compositional periods, we will move from early tonal works Verklaerte Nacht and Pelleas und Melisande to works from the expressionist period, including Das Buch der haengenden Garten, the second quartet, and Pierrot lunaire, as well as the op.11 piano pieces and the op.16 Fuenf Orchesterstueck in which Schoenberg first departed from tonality. We will continue with serial works, and end with a sampling of such late works as Kol nidre and the String Trio. As well, we will consider Schoenberg's life against the backdrop of the first half of the twentieth century, some of the influences on his music and thought, and his own tremendously significant influence as a teacher of the "Second Viennese School" composers and, later, in the United States.
