M-LT 71211 - Variations: Renaissance to 20th Century
We will study the techniques of variation by examining the different types of variation forms and their evolution from the early diferencias and divisions through chaconnes and passacaglias and significant compositions by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Webern, Babbitt and Rzewski. We will give special attention to the growth of the form in Beethoven and in Schoenberg’s idea of “developing variation.”
