M-LT 71147 - Borrowing in Music
This course considers the creative use of pre-existing music in Western European art-musical style, history, and pedagogy. By focusing on particular compositions, students will be introduced to diversity within and between musical styles and to the constant interplay of ostensibly disparate streams of musical practice. Aesthetic conceptions and preconceptions surrounding the role of the composer and his/her relationship with the audience will be examined through listening and the study of works in light of their musical and sociological backgrounds. The social and artistic implications of creative authenticity and purity will be considered throughout the history of western music.
