M-LT 71140 - Music of Sergei Prokofiev
This course focuses primarily on the symphonic and pianistic output of this multi-faceted composer. Prokofiev himself suggested five “lines” of his creative work: classical, modern, toccata, lyrical, and grotesque. These categories will provide the basic approach in this class, selecting works representative of each line in various genres. The course will pursue analytic approaches based on Prokofiev’s categories and will largely consider the intersection of traditional form and harmony with the composer’s idiosyncratic approaches to creating new, original work. The idea of “remaking the past” will inform students encounters with a variety of works over the course of the composer's creative lifetime.
