M-LT 71119 - Russian Symphonic Tradition
Beginning with Tchaikovsky's Fourth and Sixth Symphonies, and ending with Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, this course will cover symphonies and symphonic poems by 19th- and 20th- century Russian composers. Included will be music of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and others. We will consider how these composers influenced one another and what makes the Russian symphonic tradition unique. Required materials: the Dover score of Tchaikovsky's Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies is required; the score of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony is recommended.
